袋獾又被称为「塔斯马尼亚恶魔(tasmanian devil)」，已经在澳洲大陆绝种3000年，仅在塔斯马尼亚岛现踪，最近在野生动物保护组织的复育下，26只袋獾重新野放到澳洲大陆。

野生动物保护组织aussie ark分享袋獾相隔3000年重返澳洲大陆的「历史性一刻」，他们在巴灵顿山国家公园(barrington tops national park)分批野放了26只袋獾，并透过项圈、红外线相机等追踪野放后的情况，盼望2021年繁殖季来临时能迎接新生命。

aussie ark表示，袋獾过去会在澳洲大陆绝种，是因为澳洲土狗丁哥犬(dingo)会集体狩猎，但这次野放的地点并没有丁哥犬出没，因此对袋獾来说是个很适合的「新家」。

虽然塔斯马尼亚岛没有丁哥犬，但那里的野生袋獾也面临疾病问题，这种具传染性的疾病叫做「袋獾面部肿瘤病(devil facial tumour disease，dftd)」，造成80%到90%的袋獾数量减少。

袋獾身形与一只小狗差不多，肌肉发达相当壮硕，被攻击时会发出臭味、刺耳的叫声，因而被称为「塔斯马尼亚恶魔」。它们在被列为「濒危动物」，而aussie ark目前已经复育了400只小袋獾，野放至塔斯马尼亚岛，希望能重建塔斯马尼亚岛的袋獾生态。
