历届奥斯卡最佳外语片

前十九届奥斯卡奖只评美国影片，从第二十届起，才在特别奖中设最佳外语片奖。其参选影片必须是上一年十一月一日至下一年十月三十一日在某国商业性影院公映的大型故事片。每个国家只选送一部影片，这部影片由该国的电影组织或审查委员会推荐，且须加盖英文字幕，送交学院外国片委员会审查。然后进行秘密投票选出五部提名影片。观摩完五部影片后，再由四千名美国影界权威人士组成的评审委员会，选出一部最佳外国语片。该项奖只授予作品，而不授予个人。从一九四七年起至二00六年，意大利获奖十三次，法国获奖十二次，瑞典、德国获奖四次，日本，前苏联各获奖三次。
奥斯卡最佳外语片奖自从1947年第二十届起开始颁发，除1953第26届未颁奖之外，至今已有59部各国影片斩获奥斯卡最佳外语片的荣誉。从获奖影片所属国家来看，意大利获奖最多有13次登顶，紧随其后的是法国有12次，遥遥领先其他国家，从这里也可以看出意大利和法国电影的强势地位。日本影片早期表现不俗，有三部武士片获奖，那时正是日本武士片辉煌时期，55年后就见不到日本影片的身影了。而从82年至今表现的最好的则是西班牙，总共四部影片获奖，每六年就有一部。值得一提的是，瑞典获得最佳外语片的三部影片《处女泉》、《穿过黑暗的玻璃》、《芬尼与亚历山大》，均出自导演英格玛·伯格曼之手。另外以苏联（包括俄罗斯）为首的东欧国家也表现不错，8次将奥斯卡奖收入囊中。中国至今只有一部影片获奖，是台湾的《卧虎藏龙》。
